Updates
Basil is doing really well, and has grown in confidence a great deal. When he first arrived he was very scared of people and would hide behind the others for safety. Although he is still quite timid, he is getting much more confident around people and will let us stroke him on the nose when we feed him hay.
He seems to be very friendly with Socks, and they are always playing and grooming each other.
He has grown a long, fluffy coat to keep him warm throughout the winter, and has a bit of a large belly at the moment. Over Christmas and the New Year we will be working with Basil to get him used to wearing a headcollar and be led around.

Basil is coming on very nicely, he is still one of the more timid ponies and quite low down in the herd, he needs lots of patience and delicate movements when being approached. He will take hay from us and eat from the bucket of food and once he has allowed us close enough he enjoys a good stroke! Natalie put Basil in the stable to put his headcollar on and it took time to convince him it wouldn’t hurt! He had hay to munch on whilst it was done which kept him calm. Once it was on he was fine and caught on to pressure and leading very quickly.

Basil is a very sweet natured pony but very untrusting and nervous. We have been doing a lot of work just sat with him so he can learn to trust us and learn we are his friend and that there is nothing to be scared of. We have been giving him small handfuls of feed as a reward for allowing us to touch his face or neck this way he looks at his interaction with us in a positive light. We are gradually getting somewhere and each day his confidence grows. He is friends with Pippin and Pixie and they are often found as far away as possible, I’m sure they enjoy watching us walk across the field so they can then run all they way back to the gate and wait for us there! We hope to have found Basil a home with Reggie and with any luck they will be moving there in the next month or two, in the meantime we will be doing a lot of work with them so they are ready to leave at that time.
