Why Choose a Dartmoor Hill Pony:

Well there are many reasons to purchase or loan a Dartmoor Hill Pony.

Firstly most Dartmoor Hill ponies have fantastic temperaments. Although they are often
completely unhandled when they go to their new homes, with time and a bit of patience, Hill
ponies will turn into fantastic all-round ponies. Because of their temperaments they make
perfect childrens ponies and therapy ponies. They are quick to learn, but are also very trusting
and

Sometimes they are critisized for being too clever, but we think that this is a
fantastic trait. Most Hill ponies are very intelligent, and will learn new skills very quickly if you
teach them using trust, time and also lots of positive reinforcement (Praise, scratches, food as
a reward for positive behaviour.)

You do, however, have to be careful when using food to teach them things. You should only use
food as a reward for positive behaviour, not just 'as and when.' As they love food, lots of Hill
Ponies will get nippy if they are given 'treats' all of the time. If they are at all nippy and pushy when
you are training them it's important to either ignore this, or block them so they can't actually

It is important that you set boundaries when working with Hill Ponies, just like you do with children.
They will respond to kindness and non-confrontational behaviour, but it is just as important that you
are confident and sure of yourself. Although you have to be be gentle and kind, you also have to be
assertive.

Dartmoor Hill ponies can excel in many different spheres. Because of their calm, quiet temperaments.
